David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Life Strategies, the gallery’s first solo exhibition for artist Silvia Levenson. The exhibition will feature sculptures, wall pieces and installations comprised of glass and mixed media.
Levenson’s art examines the notion of security and how humans achieve it in contemporary society. We instinctively think of home as safe and warm, but political strife and cultural tensions can invade our homes and lives, thus challenging our personal safety and spoiling our domesticity. To deal with these issues and other life struggles, a myriad of bottled elixirs and remedies are readily available to console and comfort, but not address the underlying cause of unhappiness or insecurity. Her work also has an underlying Pop sensibility in that glass is her primary medium, which we typically think of as mass produced. However, glass is also a common domestic material used frequently in the kitchen, but it is also very personal as we put it to our mouth to deliver nourishment and medicine.
Silvia Levenson was born in Buenos Aires and currently lives and works in Italy. She is an international artist and has had more than 40 solo exhibitions in Venice, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Lyon, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Berlin, Portland and San Francisco, among other cities, and her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions. Levenson’s art can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, TX), New Mexico Museum of Art (Santa Fe), Corning Museum (Corning, NY), Musée du Verre (Sars Poteries, France), Tikanoja Art Museum (Vassa, Finland), Glasmuseum Ebeltoft (Denmark), Ernsting Glass Collection (Coestfeld, Germany), Museo Leon Rigaulleau (Argentina), Museo del Vetro (Altare, Italy), among others.
